Abstract

HERNANDEZ CORDERO, Adrián  and  DIAZ PARRA, Ibán. Gentrification a transatlantic concept: Dialogues between Spain and Mexico. Iztapalapa. Rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.93, pp.13-45.  Epub Aug 08, 2022. ISSN 2007-9176.  https://doi.org/10.28928/ri/932022/atc1/hernandezcorderoa/diazparrai.

Some years ago, gentrification burst into Spanish-speaking urban studies as a powerful and polemic concept that revitalized debates on the city. In this context, the aim of the present paper is to analyze the way in which research on gentrification has been developed in Mexico and Spain, based on a comparative exercise that takes as reference four analytical axes: central location, patrimonialization and tourism, displacement and resistance. The methodology consisted of a large bibliographic review of academic research that had gentrification as a central argument. Among the findings of this document, convergences located in the central location of gentrification can be mentioned, as well as in its relationship with patrimonialization phenomena. While there were divergences in the way in which the displacement and resistance to the process are expressed by social movements.

Keywords : cities; neoliberal urbanism; urban conflict; historic centres; displacement.
