Abstract

PEREZ TAGLE, Jesús Antonio. USA’s hegemony: A proposal for a conceptual framework. Iztapalapa. Rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2022, vol.43, n.93, pp.197-228.  Epub Aug 08, 2022. ISSN 2007-9176.  https://doi.org/10.28928/ri/932022/aot2/pereztaglej.

In this paper I propose a conceptual definition of USA’s hegemony. I used the analytical method from the Modern World-System perspective and the functioning of capitalism, where I argued that the hegemony of the United States must be understood as the continuous articulation between 1) the permanent accumulation of collective power (which implies that the media spreads the “universal” project of the hegemon; the protagonism in the creation and functioning of the spaces of articulation and; maintenance of the geographical expansion of capital and asymmetric exchange) and 2) the permanent exercise of domination (it implies the control of the monetary system; maintenance of accumulation by dispossession and the administration and application of multilateral and unilateral force) that enables and encourages the hegemonic power to direct the Modern World-System towards the maintenance and expansion of capitalism. However, this aim faces a process of relative hegemonic decline.

Keywords : leadership; dominance; interstate system; capitalism; Modern World-System.
