Abstract

CARBAYO-ABENGOZAR, Mercedes. Windows, Hopper, Concha Piquer and Carmen Martín Gaite. Iztapalapa. Rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2023, vol.44, n.94, pp.125-146.  Epub Mar 17, 2023. ISSN 2007-9176.  https://doi.org/10.28928/ri/942023/aot1/carbayoabengozarm.

Windows are a key narrative element in the fictional work of Carmen Martín Gaite. Music and painting have always been present in her narrative as tools to explore her creative process. These elements allow us to appreciate a change in her gaze: from the inside of her older narrative until El cuarto de atrás (1978), and in both directions (from inside to outside and vice versa) from her first trip to New York in 1980. She wanders along the city by the hand of Edward Hopper, as a flâneuse transforming that gaze and reflecting on her past where popular songs opened windows to dreams for women who occupied private spaces. After her trip to New York, to the double gaze of the windows she adds the fragmented one of mirrors, which as in the case of Hopper, offer different perspectives from where to look out and inside.

Keywords : collage; copla; gender; poetry; children’s stories.
