Abstract
DOMINGUEZ-ARISTA, David Rodolfo. Bacanora, mezcal of Sonora: From clandestinity to Denomination of Origin. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.56, e20958. Epub Dec 06, 2021. ISSN 2395-9169. https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v30i56.958.
Objective:
Show the consequences to design and to request Denomination of Origin (DO) without participation of the producers because they have failed to accomplish social organizations, this is because of years of mezcal prohibition.
Methodology:
We realized documentary research and fieldwork, this study were carried out in the second semester 2019 in the city of Hermosillo and in three municipalities of Sonoran Sierra: Suaqui Grande, Ures and La Colorada. Thirty-five interviews were conducted.
Results:
We identified the consequences of Denomination of Origin for Bacanora (DOB); we detected the causes and the consequences of lack of collective action among the producers of the beverage, and we identified two levels of production: large and small.
Limitations:
There is not an official database regarding the number of Bacanora producers and their factories in the region. Conclusions; DO is the result of an exogenous effort in Sierra Region; however it is triggering the necessary social resources for local development, although not necessarily on an equal basis.
Keywords : regional development; agave production; tradition; local development; collective action; rural organization.
