Abstract

PONCE LEON, Juan José. Animalist Subjectivity: A Perspective from Men’s Studies. Vegan Masculinities, or the Queerness of Anti-Speciesist Men. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2020, vol.6, e608.  Epub Feb 07, 2022. ISSN 2395-9185.  https://doi.org/10.24201/reg.v6i1.608.

This sets out to analyze the shaping of masculine vegan subjectivities. The analysis is based on anti-speciesist men connected to collective actions in Ecuador. Through a qualitative methodology, we analyze archive photos of a collective that uses performance as a means of as well as in-depth interviews with the actors. The conclusions enable us to consider vegan masculinities as being marginal and subordinate to the prevailing gender project in regard to the abjectness or queerness of anti-speciesist males’ condition, based on attention paid to animal alterity; another finding is that certain political body practices seem to reaffirm the heteronorm.

Keywords : subjectivation; dissident masculinities; veganisms; queer.
