Abstract
SALAZAR VALSECA, Mayra Guadalupe; CASIQUE RODRIGUEZ, Irene and CONSTANT, Chloé. Remunerating Extra-Domestic Work and Empowering of Women in Mexico. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2022, vol.8, e873. Epub Aug 15, 2022. ISSN 2395-9185. https://doi.org/10.24201/reg.v8i1.873.
In this paper we analyze the relationship between extra-domestic work and the empowerment of married and unmarried women in Mexico based on information from the Encuesta Nacional sobre la Dinámica de las Relaciones en los Hogares, ENDIREH’s 2016 survey on relationships within households. We compare the levels of empowerment among women who do not perform extra-domestic work, those who work without remuneration, and those who have a paid job. We found evidence that extra-domestic work is related to higher levels of empowerment of women, both globally and in particular aspects; but such an increase is clearer when the extra-domestic work involves remuneration. Compared to women without extra-domestic work, women in paid work have greater decision-making power, greater autonomy, are less attached to gender stereotypes, have greater economic resources, and their partners participate more actively in household and care work. It is concluded that extra-domestic work is positively associated with high levels of empowerment of women and the relationship is influenced by sociodemographic factors and the type of their work.
