Introduction and objective:

The diagnostic and accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy assisted by endoscopic ultrasound (USE-FNAB) ranges between 68.4% and 84.3%, depending on several factors. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the safety, diagnostic performance and technical aspects involved in the adequacy of lymph node sampling by EUS-FNAB with emphasis on the use of suction.

Material and methods:

38 lymph node biopsies were taken and analyzed for all variables that could have an impact on the final adaptation of the samples. A descriptive analysis was made by means and percentages, and an inferential analysis by parametric and nonparametric tests depending on the distribution and type of variable considering a statistical significance of p < 0.05.

Results:

Material was obtained in 100% of the studies, although only 73.7% of samples were reported adequate for diagnosis during the rapid cytology analysis, the final diagnostic yield was 84.2% after the review of the cell block (p = 0.031). In our study, there was no impact on the suitability of the sample when comparing the use of suction (55.3%) versus no suction (44.7%) (p = 0.258).

Conclusions:

The final review of the cell block increases the diagnostic yield of USE-FNAB in lymph nodes.
