Introduction:
endoscopic sphincterotomy followed by papillary balloon dilation (ES-LBD) is a procedure designed to manage large bile duct stones and to avoid the high pancreatitis rates related to papillary balloon dilation without sphincterotomy in patients with choledocholithiasis.
Objective:
to report our experience in patients with large bile duct stones managed with ES-LBD.
Material and methods:
we made an ambispective study in patients with large bile duct stones (≥10 mm) managed with ES-LBD.
Results:
54 patients were included, with a median age of 62 years (range 26-93 years); 34 (62.96%) were female. The median balloon dilation diameter was 12 mm (7-20 mm). The procedure was successful in 36 (66.6%) patients. There were 9 (15.5%) complications and no mortality.
Conclusions:
ES-LBD can be performed successfully and safely in most patients with large bile duct stones.
