Introduction:

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a diffuse inflammatory disorder that affects the rectum, sometimes affecting the entire large intestine. Colonoscopy shows the inflammatory reaction of the colon mucosa, often edematous and friable, with loss of the vascular pattern and with ulcerous and polypoid lesions.

Objective:

To determine the relationship between the endoscopic findings suggestive of UC and its histological counterpart in the Regional Hospital “General Ignacio Zaragoza”.

Material and methods:

Observational, analytical, retrospective study. All patients without diagnosis will be included, with an endoscopic report compatible with UC and biopsy in a period between January 2015 and July 2019.

Results:

Of the 57 patients with findings compatible with UC, 37 had a positive histological relationship for the disease (64.9%) while 20 were negative for UC (35%). The masculine gender dominated discreetly (52.6%) against feminine (47.3). The predominant age group was below 35 years.

Conclusions:

There is a need to be able to have an opportune diagnosis and treatment in inflammatory bowel disease to avoid its complications.
