Abstract
ZARAGOZA-ARIAS, Noé; MORA-ROMERO, Marco A. de la and MARTINEZ-JIMENEZ, Francisco J.. Flexible endoscopic management of Zenker’s diverticulum. Experience in reference hospital and description of the surgical technique. Endoscopia [online]. 2021, vol.33, n.3, pp.110-115. Epub May 09, 2022. ISSN 2444-6483. https://doi.org/10.24875/end.21000029.
Background:
The most frequent treatment of Zenker’s Diverticulum is by performing a myotomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle, with or without resection of the diverticulum. Conventional surgical management has been gradually replaced by endoscopic therapy due to the advantages offered by minimal invasion.
Aim:
To describe the experience of endoscopic management of Zenker’s diverticulum and to detail the surgical technique performed in a high-specialty hospital.
Methods:
The registry and statistical analysis of patients with a diagnosis of Zenker’s Diverticulum admitted to the General Surgery service and subjected to flexible endoscopic management in a High Specialty Hospital during the period from 2016 to 2020 was carried out.
Results:
A total of 5 patients with a diagnosis of Zenker’s diverticulum were registered during the study period; all patients underwent endoscopy and esophagography as part of the study protocol; no patient had any postoperative complications and all patients had remission of symptoms.
Conclusion:
The management of Zenker’s diverticulum by means of a flexible endoscope can be considered as a feasible, effective and safe surgical technique.
