The Institute of Physics (IF) at UNAM has a large community of research in physics, being an institution with a solid national and international prestige. For more than seven decades, it has been driving various physics research centers in Mexico and played a significant role in the training of highly specialized human resources. Currently, more than 25% of its academic staff conducts basic and applied research in nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N), organized in about 17 research groups with both theoretical and experimental contributions, making the IF a leading institution in this field. Experimental researchers carry out synthesis, characterization and applications of nanomaterials in more than 20 laboratories with a wide range of experimental techniques and sophisticated and cutting edge equipment. Moreover, theoretical research lines have produced extremely novel results. This document describes in detail the research, the theoretical and experimental techniques cultivated by our researchers, our infrastructure (equipment and laboratories), the wide range of national and international collaborations, as well as sources of funding for research projects. Our achievements in the N&N area include: the publication of scientific articles in high impact international journals, which permanently receive a large number of citations; the training of human resources, dissemination and popularization of science, the frequent invitation to participate in scientific committees of congresses of international prestige, as well as being recipients of honors and awards.
