Abstract

CANALES LIZAOLA, Laura  and  LIZARRAGA SALAS, Frambel. The media agenda on immigration on the covers of El Universal, La Jornada and La Opinión during the administration of Donald Trump. Inter disciplina [online]. 2019, vol.7, n.18, pp.149-165.  Epub Dec 11, 2020. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2019.18.68978.

This article will demonstrate the way in which the media put the immigration issue between Mexico and the United States on their agendas as of the arrival of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, using as a theoretical basis the agenda setting of McCombs and Shaw that proposes that the media exert a great influence on the audience to give importance to the topics that the media consider. The case study will focus on three printed media, two national El Universal and La Jornada, and one foreign, La Opinión. The quantitative-qualitative methodology was the one used together with the content analysis technique. The findings show an inclination of the media to put the political agenda as the main theme to the public, being in the political actors Donald Trump and Enrique Peña Nieto where media attention is concentrated.

Keywords : immigration; written press; media agenda; Mexico; United States.
