Abstract

VARGAS DOMINGUEZ, Joel. A trip through Mexico in 1945: intermediaries and missionaries of science in search of the nutritional disaster for the Rockefeller Foundation. Inter disciplina [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.24, pp.97-119.  Epub June 25, 2021. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2021.24.78460.

In 1945, an official of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation was sent to Mexico to make exploration trips. The goal of the trips was to find the right places to expand the nutrition studies of the Foundation in Mexico. These trips serve us as a starting point to explore how we can analyze the job of the Rockefeller Foundation as a missionary enterprise, and brings to the spotlight other actors, the go-betweens necessary to carry these expeditions. This article aims to study the scientific work from the perspective of the history of religious missions and go-betweens, and to add another layer of analysis to the historiographical narratives about the construction of the “problem” of nutrition of diverse population groups.

Keywords : Rockefeller Foundation; history of nutrition; scientific missions; nutrition; go-betweens.
