Abstract

BARDALES PADILLA, Agustín Enrique. Worship of water and “idolatry” in a Peruvian Andean community. The case of Santiago de Maray in the present and in the seventeenth century (1677). An. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.2, pp.31-40.  Epub Aug 14, 2023. ISSN 2448-6221.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2022.77964.

The cult of water is one of the essential rituals within the Andean and Amazonian cultures in the current Peruvian territory both at the colonial level and at the present time. The main objective of this article is to describe and explain how the ritual to water, also called champería or yarqa aspiy, has been preserved over time, from colonial times to the present day, being a vehicle of social cohesion, economic reproduction, cultural identity, propitiatory rite of fertility and political positioning in the community of Santiago de Maray (Checras district, Huaura province, Lima department). To achieve this I have resorted to three methodological axes associated with the micro-historical approach, ethnohistory and ethnographic observation. This methodological strategy will make it possible to compare both time segments in which the water ritual was developed, that is, the year 1677 in the colonial era and contemporary ritual practice seeking to establish the changes and cultural permanence that survive to this day in the community peasant from Santiago de Maray.

Keywords : ethnohistory; ethnography; cultural identity.
