Abstract
BLANCO, Emilio. Reproduction or cultural mobility? Cultural resources, education dispositions and learning experiences in PISA 2012 in Mexico. Estud. sociol [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.103, pp.3-32. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2017v35n103.1516.
Two alternative views on the relationship between cultural resources and learning are discussed and compared: the cultural reproduction and the cultural mobility theories. A moderate relationship was found between students’ social origins and cultural resources at home. This association is stronger for educational resources than it is for “highbrow culture” possessions. Meanwhile, educational resources are systematically related to learning opportunities and dispositions, although explained variances for the last two are low. Also, educational resources significantly affect pisa 2012 learning results; its effects are additional to those of social origins, and there is also a positive interaction with them. Lastly, learning opportunities and dispositions explain the effect of cultural resources on learning. These results entail mixed evidence for the theories involved.
