Abstract
ESPINOZA CID, Claudia Esthela and GARCIA FIGUEROA, Gabriela. Meanings of gender and sexuality in partner violence: victims, batterers and police officers in Hermosillo, Sonora. Estud. sociol [online]. 2018, vol.36, n.108, pp.571-594. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2018v36n108.1602.
This article explores from a sociocultural perspective the meanings of gender and sexuality expressed by women suffering intimate partner violence (ipv), batterers and municipal police officers intervening in cases of violence in Hermosillo, Sonora. This analysis is important because it helps to understand the links between these meanings (particularly those associated with gender violence) and the institutionalized practices of agents directly involved in police intervention in response to this problem in that city. The study confirms the presence of traditional assessments, ideas and perceptions about the social relations between men and women, which affect the institutionalized actions of those who suffer or commit ipv, as well as the practices of law enforcement officials intervening in cases of violence.
