Abstract

ALVAREZ RODRIGUEZ, Irene. More than Armed Men. Revisiting the Self-Defense Forces of Michoacan. Estud. sociol [online]. 2021, vol.39, n.115, pp.1-7.  Epub Sep 06, 2021. ISSN 2448-6442.  https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2021v39n115.2038.

This article is an account of the subjective transformation of an ethnographer and how a series of experiences led her to adopt new approaches to her research problem, armed civilians or self-defense movements in Michoacán, Mexico. This phenomenon is frequently described as one featuring armed men -be they the armed forces, criminal leaders or civilians- making it impossible to explore the perspective of all those seen as subjects of protection. This article argues that much of the literature on armed civil mobilization is written from an androcentric notion of power, ignoring female experiences of conflict.

Keywords : protection; security; gender; conflict; power; ethnography.
