Abstract
KROZER, Alice. Marriage Alliances and Wealth Concentration among Mexican Elites in the 19th Century. Estud. sociol [online]. 2022, vol.40, n.119, pp.561-575. Epub Dec 02, 2022. ISSN 2448-6442. https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2022v40n119.2314.
Wealth inequality is a problem of historical dimensions that has characterized Mexico for centuries. This research note describes a study that analyzes the reproduction of inequalities in the 19th century through marriage alliances. It explores a mechanism of intergenerational wealth transfer widely implemented in Mexico until Independence, which remains useful for explaining the patterns of the formation and consolidation of elites today: the payment of a dowry. Together with Diego Castañeda Garza, we explore endogamic practices among the pre-revolutionary elites and their consequences for wealth concentration in Mexico, focusing particularly on the role and status of women.
Keywords : wealth inequality; elites; inheritance; dowry; Mexico.
