Abstract

VARELA HUERTA, Itza Amanda. Gender, Racialization and Representation: Notes for the Analysis of Audiovisual Products in Contemporary Mexico. Estud. sociol [online]. 2022, vol.40, n.spe, pp.211-228.  Epub Sep 22, 2023. ISSN 2448-6442.  https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2022v40.2320.

In this research note I focus on building a theoretical and methodological framework to analyze the relationship between representation, gender and ethnicity/racialization in various audiovisual products in Mexico from the period between 1980 and 2020, with the aim of articulating notions that allow me to get closer to the new filmmakers who are producing audiovisuals about racialized or ethnicized populations, I am particularly interested in analyzing how non-white women are represented: indigenous, black-Afro-Mexican and mestizo. This writing is part of a broader research on cultural studies, gender and critical studies of race in Mexico that seeks to think about racialized and ethnic identities from the ways in which they are represented in products of what has been called “culture popular” such as the soap opera, the cinema or in recent years the format of series broadcast via streaming.

Keywords : racialization; audiovisual productions; gender.
