Abstract

STAPLES, Anne. Fortune vs. status: Social mobility in 19th Century Mexico. Hist. mex. [online]. 2016, vol.65, n.4, pp.1751-1788. ISSN 2448-6531.

The life stories of military men, politicians and literary figures from the 19th century in Mexico indicate the ways in which social mobility was possible, inspite of lowly birth. There was movement in both directions, from rags to riches and back again, affecting or leaving untouched the prestige of those subjected to the whims of fortune.

Keywords : Mexico; social mobility; military men; 19th century.
