Abstract

FORERO MONTOYA, Betsy. Representation of Latin America in and for Japan: An analysis of the Japanese press. Estud. Asia Áfr. [online]. 2018, vol.53, n.3, pp.537-570. ISSN 2448-654X.  https://doi.org/10.24201/eaa.v53i3.2262.

This article analyses the contemporary representation of Latin America in the Japanese media, combining the theoretical concepts of social autopoiesis and otherness. In addition, this study also uses the communication research method of content and textual analysis to examine two decades worth of news articles published by the Japanese newspaper, The Asahi Shimbun. The resulting discussion centers on how Latin Americans are mainly portrayed as athletes or rule breakers, laying the foundation for the construction of a Latin American other required for the production and reproduction of a Japanese Self.

Keywords : Japan; Latin America; media representation; otherness.
