Abstract

CENTENO MARTIN, Marcos Pablo. Vicissitudes of Modern Japanese Studies in Spain: Review on the Occasion of the Ensayos en honor del profesor Antonio Cabezas. Estud. Asia Áfr. [online]. 2021, vol.56, n.1, pp.167-186.  Epub Feb 23, 2021. ISSN 2448-654X.  https://doi.org/10.24201/eaa.v56i1.2636.

Spanish texts on Japan date back to the sixteenth century and despite predating works in other languages, subsequent developments were erratic. Despite being pioneers, these works did not prevent Spain from falling far behind other countries in its Japanese Studies in the past century. Ensayos en honor del profesor Antonio Cabezas (2014) is a series of essays that contribute to acknowledge the role that this first generation of modern Japanologists, a group to which Professor Cabezas belonged, in the long but intermittent history of Spanish writings on Japan.

Keywords : Japanese Iberian century; Jesuit missions; history of Spanish Japanology; Antonio Cabezas.
