Abstract

CANCINO CABELLO, Nataly. The paratexts in the grammar books written by the missionaries in Latin America. Nueva rev. filol. hisp. [online]. 2017, vol.65, n.2, pp.407-440. ISSN 2448-6558.  https://doi.org/10.24201/nrfh.v65i2.3101.

During the colonial period grammar books were used by Catholic missionaries to describe the native languages then spoken in Latin America. These works contain paratexts which, despite their variety and abundance, have rarely been subjected to scholarly study. This paper offers a classification of the paratexts, identifying them either in terms of their relationship to legal matters or regarding their place in the tradition of printed grammar books. An attempt is also made to gauge their relevance to the study of different human and social disciplines.

Keywords : grammars; paratexts; missionary linguistics; printed documents; history of books.
