Abstract

REIG ALAMILLO, Asela. The polar interrogative with ¿no que…? And its evidential meaning. Nueva rev. filol. hisp. [online]. 2020, vol.68, n.1, pp.47-66.  Epub Apr 02, 2020. ISSN 2448-6558.  https://doi.org/10.24201/nrfh.v68i1.3582.

This article analyses the Spanish question of the type ¿no que…? as a marked polar interrogative construction which, unlike the corresponding neuter interrogative, contributes a conventional, non propositional meaning expressing evidential values. Especifically, ¿no que p? conveys the conflict between a first value, expressing reported indirect evidentiality (someone said p) and a second value, expressing personal evidentiality (direct or indirect) for the opposite content (it is evident that no p).

Keywords : evidentiality; marked interrogative; negative question; biased polar question; conventional, non propositional meaning.
