Abstract

RAMIREZ LUENGO, José Luis. Explaining the unknown: the discursive incorporation of indigenisms in Juan de Esteyneffer’s Florilegio Medicinal. Nueva rev. filol. hisp. [online]. 2020, vol.68, n.1, pp.255-268.  Epub Apr 02, 2020. ISSN 2448-6558.  https://doi.org/10.24201/nrfh.v68i1.3588.

The incorporation of American reality into Western culture has very important consequences for medical vocabulary, as it undergoes a significant process of lexical spreading. This paper aims to analyse some discursive mechanisms which are used in order to incorporate indigenous borrowings, so the structures used to this effect in Juan de Esteyneffer’s Florilegio medicinal will be described; the final goal is to prepare a list of these textual procedures, but also to establish the coincidences that exist between medical discourse and other discursive traditions.

Keywords : history of Latin American Spanish; 18th century; lexicon; discursive structures; Juan de Esteyneffer.
