Abstract

MARTINEZ CUERO, Julieta. Outsourcing as a profitability strategy for transnational capital: the maquiladora industry in Tijuana, 1990-2017. Anál. econ. [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.84, pp.143-167. ISSN 2448-6655.

In this paper we review different subcontracting practices carried out transnational companies and their maquiladora subsidiaries installed in Tijuana. The objective is to argue from a critical perspective that the outsourcing of production and now of labor relations is a key strategy for the profitability of capital, mainly from the United States. To do this, first we review the theoretical discussion on the incorporation of Mexico into the international subcontracting scheme through the maquila. Then, with on the consumption of national inputs and the composition of value added in the industry during the period 1990-2004 are shown. Finally, we delve into the current contracting and outsourcing conditions of the workers in the maquiladoras, highlighting the appearance and significance of new forms of subcontracting through the personnel placement agencies.
