Abstract

RINCONADA CARBAJAL, Fermín; SERNA HINOJOSA, José Antonio  and  VALDEZ RAMIREZ, Rolando Israel. Competitiveness of Mexican fresh beef in the American market, 1967-2020. Anál. econ. [online]. 2023, vol.38, n.97, pp.129-148.  Epub Feb 07, 2023. ISSN 2448-6655.  https://doi.org/10.24275/uam/azc/dcsh/ae/2022v38n97/rinconada.

The present document aims to determine the degree of competitiveness of Mexican fresh beef exports to the American market across the period 1967-2020, for this purpose the techniques of constant market participation and revealed comparative advantage was used. The results indicate that Mexico has competed against suppliers such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, improving its export competitiveness from being the fourth to the second largest supplier in the American beef market; Canada is the most outstanding country in the analysis because it has increased its share even at world level. It was identified that Mexico's RCA in this subsector showed a marked decline in the 1980s and 1990s, however, with the entry into force of NAFTA, the country recovered its export behavior. To promote the competitiveness of this economic activity, the importance of achieving greater diversification of markets for Mexican beef exports and improving trade relations with distributors is highlighted.
