Abstract

LORA, Eduardo. ¿Debe la América Latina temerle a China?. El trimestre econ [online]. 2005, vol.72, n.287, pp.459-493.  Epub Dec 05, 2022. ISSN 2448-718X.  https://doi.org/10.20430/ete.v72i287.568.

This paper compares growth conditions in China and Latin America to assess fears that China will displace Latin America in the coming decades. China's strengths include the size of the economy, macroeconomic stability, abundant low-cost labor, the rapid expansion of physical infrastructure, and the ability to innovate. China's weaknesses, stemming from insufficient separation between market and State, include poor corporate governance, a fragile financial system and misallocation of savings. Both regions share important weaknesses: the rule of law is weak, corruption endemic and education is low and very poorly distributed. Although fears on manufacturing and foreign direct investment diver sion are overblown, China may be a source of international financial instability with potentially damaging effects for Latin America.

Keywords : China; América Latina; crecimiento económico; competitividad; ambiente de inversión.
