Abstract

PIZARRO HOFER, Roberto. One step further from COVID-19. El trimestre econ [online]. 2020, vol.87, n.348, pp.1033-1057.  Epub Mar 05, 2021. ISSN 2448-718X.  https://doi.org/10.20430/ete.v87i348.1174.

COVID-19 has caused a humanitarian crisis of devastating proportions and an economic disaster without parallel. We live under a worrying uncertainty, because it is unknown how long the lockdown will last, the lack of income, unemployment, and even when will an effective vaccine or a medicine be discovered. Everyone suffers from uncertainty. Those who have assets, but much more those who have run out of income. The painful experience of coronavirus must be a lesson, and not only on the field of health, but an opportunity to change the existing unjust and irrational economic and social system. The coronavirus challenges the political class that has shrunk the state, with radical social cuts, which have seriously affected people’s lives. This crisis provides an opportunity for changes; however, they will not be automatic, but rather they will depend on the will and struggle of men and women, who have been affected by the lack of protection of the subsidiary state for decades. If no rectifications are made, there will be not only sanitary dangers but also social ones ahead.

Keywords : COVID-19; globalization; industrialization; crisis; economic growth; subsidiary state; Keynes.
