Abstract

AROCA ARAUJO, Armando. The etymological definition of Ethnomathematics and its implications for Mathematics Education. Educ. mat. [online]. 2016, vol.28, n.2, pp.175-195.  Epub Apr 08, 2022. ISSN 2448-8089.  https://doi.org/10.24844/em2802.07.

Several authors have referred to the apparent roots of the mathema- and -tics roots of the word ethnomathematics in a rather superficial way and without deepening in its analysis and their actual and potential implications In this paper, these roots are etymologicaly revised and to related to trends in current research in the Ethnomathematics Program. A literature review is conducted that includes both journal and conference papers. It is concluded that the aforementioned roots have been interpreted differently, and that several of those interpretations have little to do with the etymology and with current research trends in the Ethnomathematics Program.

Keywords : Etymology; mathema, tics; research trends; ethnomathematics.
