In the present article we analyze a learning trajectory mediated by the intensive use of technology, designed with the purpose of developing adequate reasoning about samples, variability and sampling distributions in social science students. The results show that an informal approach based on sampling simulation can help students to develop correct reasoning about sampling distributions and build the basis for understanding statistical inference. The idea of sample size and its effect on the variability of a sampling distribution and precision of an estimation of population characteristics has been largely understood by the students, but the confusion between population, sample and sampling distribution confirms the complexity of these concepts. Regarding the interpretation of the information that contains a sampling distribution, most of the students have correctly identified the unusualness of a sample.
