Abstract

GUILLEN ESCAMILLA, Josaphat Enrique. Distribution of mira and fíjate in the Educated Norm. A Study of Mexico City Spanish. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.1, pp.103-126.  Epub May 12, 2023. ISSN 2448-8224.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2023.11.1.011x0023s04.

This paper has two aims: (i) to describe the influence of the social factors of age and sex in the use of the discourse markers mira/mire and fíjate/fíjese in the educated norm of Mexico City Spanish, and (ii) to compare their frequency in that norm to other varieties of Spanish. For these purposes, a subsample was constructed from the corpus El habla de la ciudad de México (Lope Blanch, 1971), and a meta-analysis was carried out with educated norms in Spanish from nine other cities. The results show a clear contrast between these discourse markers in the educated norm of Mexico City and those from the other cities. The evidence also shows that the social factors of age and sex have no influence on their use.

Keywords : focus markers of alterity; corpus linguistics; educated norm; varieties of Spanish.
