Abstract
RAMIREZ LUENGO, José Luis. Indigenous American Words in Nineteenth-Century Guatemalan Lexicography: The Example of Batres Jáuregui’s Vicios del lenguaje y provincialismos de Guatemala. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.2, pp.5-36. Epub Oct 23, 2023. ISSN 2448-8224. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2023.11.2/00x27os131.
Although Antonio Batres Jáuregui was a leading scholar during the normativist period of Central American lexicography, his work has not received as much attention as that of others such as Gagini or Membreño. This paper analyzes the incidence of indigenous words collected in Batres’s Vicios del lenguaje y provincialismos de Guatemala (Guatemala City: Encuadernación y Tipografía Nacional, 1892). It examines the relative frequency of these words in the text, their etymology, their lexical fields, and the text’s explicit judgments concerning their use in order to better understand Batres Jáuregui’s ideas and the evaluation of indigenous languages by nineteenth-century Central American lexicographers.
