Abstract

CANTO VALDES, Luis Roberto. Suicide and Pelagrosos. The voluntary death in the haciendas of Yucatán during the Porfiriato. Let. hist. [online]. 2017, n.16, pp.111-139. ISSN 2448-8372.

In this article, we tackle the voluntary death of the laborers of the henquen plantation that was directly vinculated with Pellagra disease (a disease linked to poeple living in extreme poberty). The suicide rate and the Pellagra, appeared in the State of Yucatan, Mexico, during a historical age in Mexico, known as “The Porfiriato” (1877-1910), a prosperous period of time in the history of Mexico. Similarly, in this work we attempt to analize how the suicide of the “pelagrosos” was seen by the Media in the State of Yucatan and what the Judicial records from that time revealed.

Keywords : Suicide; pelagra; porfiriato; haciendas; poverty.
