Abstract

JUAREZ DE OLARTE, Andrés. To Civilize the Race! The Constitutional ban of Bullfighting 1916. Let. hist. [online]. 2017, n.16, pp.141-164. ISSN 2448-8372.

This article highlights the forbiddance of bullfights in Mexico City officially decreed by Venustiano Carranza on October 11, 1916. In the first two paragraphs, the role played by the El Universal newspasper and its Director Felix Palavicini, as main promoters of the abolition decree, is shown; whereas in the last three paragraphs, the historical circumstances in which it occurred, its reasons and the objectives sought are explained.
