Abstract
PURECO ORNELAS, José Alfredo and GARCIA CRESCENCIO, Alma Delia. From the State to the market. The general trend of rice production in Mexico, 1930-2010. Let. hist. [online]. 2017, n.17, pp.157-183. ISSN 2448-8372.
This article discusses the historical evolution of rice production in Mexico from 1930 to 2010 considering a chronological view and using statistical-official-data analysis. Particular interest has been paid on two facts of historical relevance: by one hand, the strong expansion of rice-growing sector until the 1980s and, then, the sharp drop of it at the end of the period. It is important to underline the long-run rice production cycle witnessed by Mexico since post-revolutionary period to the present, the important role played by the central and northwest regions of the country in the expansionary phase of the cycle and, at the end, the translation occurred in the rice-growing sector to the Mexican southeastern humid tropic region in its contractionary phase.
