Abstract

During the New Spain regime, dances were condemned by the Church due the belief that they were harmful and against the morale of the people in addtition to foment lasciviousness and sexual desire. The ecclesiastical novohispanos were not unfamiliar to this thought and especially criticized dances as the contradanza and the waltz. This work makes a comparison among some of their testimonies to glimpse the arguments that were used to reach such sanctions. They warned about the degradation of morals of well-off society at the end of the Viceroyalty.
