Abstract

PINERA RAMIREZ, David; ESPINOZA MELENDEZ, Pedro  and  SANCHEZ VEGA, Pahola. Catedral de Tijuana The vicissitudes of the cathedral of Tijuana: its origins as a small wooden temple. Let. hist. [online]. 2020, n.22, pp.87-118.  Epub Apr 30, 2021. ISSN 2448-8372.  https://doi.org/10.31836/lh.22.7196.

This paper analyzes the history of the first Catholic church of Tijuana. Its origins date back to the late 19th century, under the administration of missionaries from California. Started in the 20th century, a small wooden temple with the characteristics of a Protestant church in rural America would be installed, which during the following decades it acquired features more like those of a Mexican Catholic temple. This would be consolidated by the middle of the century, giving it the status of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Also, the history of this temple is linked to the political tensions between the church and the state, and the role that different social organizations had in this.

Keywords : Catholic Church; temple; border interaction; architecture; state-church relations.
