Abstract

CRUZ CORTES, Barut. The world and the worlds of disability. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2019, vol.26, n.75, pp.117-147.  Epub July 03, 2020. ISSN 2448-8488.

This article addresses the issue of identity and stigma faced by the men with motor-type disabilities in Mexico City. It is an invitation to delve into a reflection on issues such as work, sexuality and the vision of people with disabilities in relation to their personal, family and social situation. As the paper shows, although for them their disability limits certain activities, it does not determine their being, as people without disabilities generally tend to believe. This discrepancy is what leads to stereotyping, labeling and ultimately stigmatization. Approaching the individual life of each of these men is an opportunity to increase the understanding of these new worlds within the scope of disability.

Keywords : Disability; identity; stigma; stereotypes; worlds.
