Abstract

GALLARDO ARIAS, Patricia. Heritage and community development in the Mixteca region of Puebla. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.81, pp.247-266.  Epub Apr 04, 2022. ISSN 2448-8488.

The objective of this article is to analyze the current relationship that the communities of Cantera de Tlayúa (a municipality of Tepexi de Rodríguez); Santa Ana Teloxtoc and San Juan Raya (in the municipality of Zapotitlán Salinas) —in Puebla’s Mixteca region— maintain with their local paleontological, archaeological and natural assets. It is interesting to clarify how this fossil, archaeological and natural heritage has been used to promote community development, along with considering what value these assets actually have, and whether or not they have been a fundamental piece with respect to the identity of the inhabitants of this region. Firstly, the concept of heritage with regarding these archaeological, natural and paleontological assets is discussed, as well as their heritagization; thereafter, the cases of the communities in the Mixteca region of Puebla are presented; finally, the article closes with a discussion on the value of heritage for community development.

Keywords : Mixteca region of Puebla; heritage; identity; community development.
