Abstract

ATILANO FLORES, Juan José. Is there a ranchero worldview? Approach to the heritage of colonial evangelizing thought. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.83, pp.183-213.  Epub Oct 10, 2022. ISSN 2448-8488.

Based on a bibliographic review combined with the consultation of colonial resources, this article presents a state of play regarding the ranchera society. Starting from the analysis of the historical, sociological and anthropological approaches to this sector of the Mexican community, the question arises as to whether the ranchera society has a specific worldview. The basis of the said system of thought is explored through the theological principles that guided the evangelization, by the Augustinians and Franciscans, in the 16th Century. The proposal is that the ranchero ethos was founded on the notions of property/ domestication, which were inherited from colonial thought.

Keywords : Mestizos; thought; livestock; property/domestication.
