Abstract

MERCADO MONDRAGON, Jorge. Another reading of the progress of COVID-19 to the east of the Valley of Mexico and indigenous communities. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.30, n.86, pp.99-119.  Epub Sep 25, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

In the present work, socioeconomic and cultural indicators are analyzed in the eastern fringe of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM) where a good part of the indigenous population lives, in order to examine the progress of COVID-19, without strictly adhering to the demographic reasoning of the health authorities. The closure of public space —as part of the sanitary measures— and the consequences it has for families that depend on informal activities as the main survival strategy, the consequence of which has been the appearance of famine episodes, are also analyzed.

Keywords : pandemic; public space; social distancing; survival strategies; famine.
