Abstract

HERNANDEZ FLORES, Fabiola. Pilgrimage and Infrastructure in the Modernization of the Tepeyac Sanctuary (1880-1896). Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.30, n.87, pp.151-172.  Epub Nov 17, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

This article proposes that the extensions of the Tepeyac cemetery and the Collegiate Church of Guadalupe carried out in the 19th century shaped the modernization of the sanctuary following European models. The goal was turning the Ville of Guadalupe into a massive religious and cultural pilgrimage site. However, the imitation of foreign patterns produced technical, administrative, and economic hardships. Drawing on archives, caricatures and press this paper analyzes the urban effects of these projects. The sources point out that infrastructures and pilgrims threatened the water system, the sanitation, the security, and railways; furthermore, they triggered corruption and socio-spatial segregation.

Keywords : pilgrimage; infrastructure; urban transformation; Villa de Guadalupe; XIX Century.
