Abstract

GALAVIZ MIRANDA, Cuitlahuac Alfonso. Emotions and interpretative frames in the study of social movements. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.30, n.88, pp.267-284.  Epub Apr 08, 2024. ISSN 2448-8488.

During the 1980s and 1990s there was an expansion of interest in the symbolic dimensions of social movements. As a result, more interpretative analytical models were developed. Some of the most important of these are the study of emotions and frame analysis. This article presents the basic assumptions that support these theoretical perspectives as analytical tools; there is a special interest in the study of emotions because it is more recent and less developed approach. The article argues that, although structural and cultural perspectives are not necessarily mutually exclusive, the assumption of culture and the world of meanings as secondary elements for the explanation of the origin, development and end of social movements must be avoided.

Keywords : social movements; interpretive approaches; emotions; frame analysis.
