Abstract

Objective:

To evaluate the care of postoperative pain of the highly specialized medical unit of the IMSS, León Guanajuato, Mexico.

Material and method.

A study of observational, descriptive, prospective and transversal type which included 180 adult patients with ASA 1 and II, scheduled for non- ambulatory surgery. We studied five postoperative pain care indicators established by the Joint Commission on the accreditation of health organizations. (JCAHO).

Results.

67.7% reported having had pain, 65.5% was managed with NSAIDs and the 32.2% requested rescue medicine. 31.6% (57) presented severe pain. The prevalence of pain was 48.7%. The level of care was reported by patients as "satisfied" and "very satisfied". From the survey carried out to the medical surgeons. 83.3% provided information to their patients about postoperative pain.

Conclusions.

The management of postoperative pain is still a real problem and poorly controlled by the unit staff, maintains a high prevalence, resulting in dissatisfaction and suffering of patients.
