Abstract
CENTENO PARTIDA, María de Lourdes; VALDES DAVILA, María Guadalupe and GOMEZ LOPEZ, Luis Felipe. Literacy Practices with Children in Vulnerable Urban Contexts: The Cognitive and the Sociocultural. Rev. latinoam. estud. educ. [online]. 2021, vol.51, n.2, pp.201-232. Epub Oct 20, 2023. ISSN 2448-878X. https://doi.org/10.48102/rlee.2021.51.2.374.
The research prompt of this article was the need to document and systematize literacy practices in Centro Polanco, a community center that offers psychological and learning support to children and teenagers of impoverished neighborhoods. The research is a case study based on the qualitative method. It focused on a group of 6-8-year-old children with difficulties acquiring initial reading and writing skills, who attended Centro Polanco twice a week for guidance and support. This article states that developing abilities such as phonological processing, graphic analysis, actions of reading and writing, constitute operations that -combined with a series of materials and teacher guidance- act as cultural artifacts as they ease and enable learning the key elements for literacy.
