Abstract

FLORES-CRESPO, Pedro. How does Culture Educate?. Rev. latinoam. estud. educ. [online]. 2022, vol.52, n.3, pp.227-247.  Epub Sep 05, 2022. ISSN 2448-878X.  https://doi.org/10.48102/rlee.2022.52.3.521.

This article argues that culture, understood here as the various artistic and aesthetic expressions, enriches our cognitive abilities. Although school life was canceled as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, our chances of life and human flourishing were not. In such a way, music, literature, painting, and other artistic expressions make up a body of knowledge that makes us learn. Starting from some conceptual precisions, this text exposes in three sections a series of arguments to explain how it is that art educates. It is concluded that, due to their sensitive gaze, artists create a better real world, with which, as Paz (2003) affirms, sensitive freedom can be built to make us “understand without understanding”.

Keywords : arts; culture; education; freedom; literature.
