Abstract
CAVALCANTI, Erinaldo. Teaching History through textbooks: production, possibilities and challenges for teachers’ Education. Debates hist. [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.2, pp.23-53. Epub June 20, 2022. ISSN 2594-2956. https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v9i2.805.
This paper analyzes the production of history textbooks used by basic education teachers in Brazil, aiming to reflect upon the level of complexity involved in the manufacturing process of these widely used tools. The study’s methodology is critical reading and analysis of specialized literature to understand the main relationships that define the norms and rules of textbook production. The documentary research method is also used in investigating and categorizing the Public Edict of the National Textbook Program (PNLD) to problematize the limits and possibilities that define the construction of textbooks. The essential picture that emerges from this analysis is that textbook production is a dynamic and complex process and that there are advantages and disadvantages and multiple forms of use in the exercise of the teaching of History through textbooks in basic education. It is concluded that initial teacher training education is called on to rethink the uses of the textbook in the classroom, which should become an object of study/reflection.
