Abstract

LOPEZ SANCHEZ, Roberto. The Chavista process: A comparative historical analysis. Debates hist. [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.1, pp.47-84.  Epub Mar 27, 2023. ISSN 2594-2956.  https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v11i1.1055.

This paper presents a comparative historical analysis between the so-called “Chavista Process”; and the previous four great processes of sociopolitical transformation that have arisen in Venezuela since its Independence. We considered fundamental aspects such as the causes of the bankruptcy of the structure of colonial domination during the war of independence, the democratic and egalitarian traits that were generated in Venezuelan society from that process of independence, the people’s participation in the independence and all subsequent processes of sociopolitical change, the political transformations implemented in these great processes of historical change, the repeated progressive civic-military alliance raised throughout the 20th century, the repeated betrayals that each revolutionary group executes against its transformative project after consolidating itself in power, the processes of conformation of the new elites, and the periods of political regression and their characteristics. The paper concludes by defining the main characteristics of the political management of Hugo Chávez - Nicolás Maduro, and by formulating at the same time possible trends of historical development, introducing, thus, a prospective analysis.

Keywords : Social egalitarianism; popular participation; civil-military alliance; political revolution; political regression.
