Abstract

RODRIGUEZ DOMINGUEZ, Guadalupe  and  LOPEZ VERA, Elvia Estefanía. Presentation of the digital Repository “Biblioiconografía mexicana de los siglos XVI y XVII”. Rev. hist. Am. [online]. 2021, n.161, pp.475-502.  Epub Feb 21, 2022. ISSN 2663-371X.  https://doi.org/10.35424/rha.161.2021.917.

This article presents the digital repository “Biblioiconografía mexicana de los siglos XVI y XVII” as an electronic educational resource that registers, catalogs and specifies information on New Spain’s editorial production. Specifically on the engravings used in New Spain’s printed books during two stages: 1540 to 1600 and 1601 to 1650; In both periods, the copies were carefully collated to form a refined and complete corpus of the works printed in New Spain, with a figure close to a thousand engravings. The methodology starts from the concept of biblioiconography and is supported by material analysis, to account for engraving as an element that can be studied in its iconographic composition; but also as part of the book as a unit of analysis. In this perspective, our Repository offers specific information about the engraving, its description and its location in the printed book of New Spain. It is available for free consultation, with the intention of promoting research on this period.
